Time to return to Vipava valley, to the village of Planina and the family Ferjančič. We’re tasting another red from their repertoire in a due manner, and the choice is another respectful bomb. We’re looking at their majestic red blend named Fino red.
Ferjančič’s elder brother – the Fino white, is a renowned blend, and the need and request for a red brother were so high it first came to the market in 2019. It was the vintage 2015, so now we’re looking at their second edition of the blend. And already, it’s giving exemplar results. It was selected as the protocolar wine for the commune of Ajdovščina this May.
The Fino red is composed as a homage to the famed right bank, packing 70 % Merlot, 20 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 % Cabernet Franc. Grapes are hand-harvested from approximately twenty-five years old vineyards growing at altitudes between 220 and 300 meters above sea level and are planted in Soudan – the local name for flysch.
After destemming and crushing the pomace macerates in oak barrels for ten days, it is pressed. The young wine matures in new barriques for three years with Batonnage, also conducting malolactic conversion. Finally, it is bottled, following course filtration, and after at least half a year of bottle ageing, it is introduced to the market.
Fino rdeče presents with a deep, ruby red colour and dense texture. It stops quickly in our glass, and we can observe enchanting, coloured tears slipping slowly at its walls.
Its bouquet is intense, alluring reminiscent of overripe berries. We find black currants, blueberries, black cherries, mulberries. The background shows scents of violet, red rose. They are followed by hints of chocolate, coffee, carob, cloves, leather, humus and a slight touch of smoke.
Its taste is dry, soft, hiding well the 14,5 % alcohols grade. At the same time, it is youthfully fresh, tasty and tannic. Tannins are serving their astringency gradually, in waves. An intense wine of noble elegance, with a vigorous body and lasting persistency of taste, displaying flavours of overripe berries, chocolate, carob and smoke in the aftertaste and showing an exceptional life potential in front of it.
A bottle will cost you approximately 25 Eur, and you can order it at Faladur, Vino direkt or by contacting the winemaker at +386 41 834 013 or sending an email to vina@ferjancic.si.
