Brda hills are such a lovely, picturesque corner of Slovenia it will enchant you, making you forget your worries. Chances for this increase drastically if you stop buy at Jakončič’s villa Iaquin, as you can sit on the terrace having a fantastic look at their vineyards or refresh yourselves in the pool while sipping elegantly crafted wines. And today’s selection is their elegant, barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon.

We are looking at a single-vineyard wine. Vines are planted atop of the hill close to the village of Fojana, meaning it faces all of the directions, at an altitude of 180 meters above sea level. The vineyard counts for 22 years. It is planted on Opoka, grassed and looked after with low-intervention methods.

Grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripeness, destemmed and crushed. They macerate for 15 days with the addition of selected yeast in a large vinificator. After 15 days, the still fermenting mash is gently pressed, the wine is left for the sediment to deposit for one day. It is then transferred to mature in new French oak barriques for three years, also undergoing malolactic fermentation during this time. After the assemblage, it is bottled and conducts a further year of bottle ageing before entering the market.

This Cabernet Sauvignon features a deep ruby red colour with a dense texture.

Expressive and luscious aromas evoke ripe blueberry, black currant, violet, roasted hazelnuts, chocolate, coffee, cloves, cedar, mint and rosemary.

The taste is virtuous, soft but at the same time refreshing, with velvety tannins slowly rounding up—a wine with a vigorous body. The taste is lasting and elegant and will only improve with years of maturation.

A majestic cabernet sauvignon with tremendous ageing potential. This youngster shows the winemakers’ mastery and determination to produce a wine that can please now and will keep on delighting its guests for at least the next ten years. You can order it by sending an email to uros@iaquin.si, ales@iaquin.si or by calling the number +386 41 456 506. They frequently deliver to Ljubljana, and a bottle costs 42 Eur.

However, I strongly suggest you book a stay at their villa and enjoy Iaquin wines straight at the cellar. You won’t regret it, trust me.
