We’re moving to the district of Bizeljsko – Sremič, back to Andreja and Janko Kobal. This time to look at their Pinot Gris, bottled under their premium line Sv. Jurij (St. George). He’s the village’s patron, and motifs on the label are those from the village’s small church dating back to the 15th century.
Grapes are coming from one of their oldest vineyards that were planted in 1993. They are facing southwest at an altitude of approximately 350 meters above sea level. The Kobals’ look after their vineyards with low intervention methods without using herbicides.
They hand-harvested grapes 20th of September, when overripe. After destemming, berries were placed into an inert press with dry ice to keep temperatures low. Fermentation started spontaneously, monitoring temperatures not to go above 20 ° Celsius.
After 7 days, with almost concluded fermentation, the mash was gently pressed, and the wine was placed into a new oak barrel, which combines French and Slavonian oak, of 700 litres. It matured there until the next vintage, close to 12 months. Following bottling, it was left to age and is now slowly coming to the market.
This Pinot Gris presents himself with a golden yellow colour and a slight amber edge, with a dense texture.
Aromas are accentuated, ripe. It exudes roasted almonds, butter, baked apples, dried figs and apricots. Followed by forest honey, ginger, straw, mint, sage, oriental spices, cinnamon and green pepper.
The taste is smooth, virtuous, oily and at the same time fresh. It leaves a salty, warm and slightly astringent taste with a vigorous body and just the right persistence—most of all, a wine for contemplation that will please lovers of decisive, characterful wines.
A bottle will cost you a fair approximate of 20 Eur, and you can order it straight at Janko or Andreja or at Vina Posavja.
