It is time for us to return to David and Taya Kozinc, to taste their acclaimed expression of Blaufränkisch, or as it is called in Slovenia Modra frankinja. But, of course, we do not taste just any Blaufränksich tonight, but the best of this Slovenia’s autochthonous grape variety, selected by a panel of connoisseurs at this year’s festival dedicated entirely to this variety.

David represents the young generation of winemakers, but his wines show precision and dedication. He’s crafting remarkable expressions of sparkling but also still wines that are always a pleasure to taste.

Grapes for this wine come from the south-facing vineyard Skale that spans at altitudes between 380 and 400 meters above sea level and grow on a mixture of clay, limestone and marl. The mash ferments at controlled temperatures in stainless vats for two weeks before being racked into oak barrels for thirty months, also conducting malic conversion in the process.

This Blaufränkisch presents with a clear, ruby red colour of translucent borders and dense texture.

Its sophisticated bouquet indicates ripeness, black currant, blackberry, ripe plum and violet. All in all, they are nicely supported by gentle wood perceptions that evoke cedar, vanilla and a slight hint of cocoa. In the end, we find black peppercorns and a subtle hint of fern.

Its mouthfeel acts softly, with moderate alcohols, while offering well-balanced freshness and rounding, velvety tannins. All in all a wine of balance with an intense taste, vigorous structure, pronounced elegance and lasting aftertaste

A wine with the potential to age for the next seven years and more. A bottle will cost you approximately 15 Eur, and you can order it by contacting David at +386 41 876 047 or by sending an email to davidkozinc@gmail.com.
