We’re returning tonight to the Kristančič family, who produces wines under the Kristalvin brand, to look at their latest addition to the selekcija line. A line marked by a thorough selection of grapes already in the vineyard and then matured in oak barrels. This time we’ll look at their Merlot.
Grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed. The mash then macerated with spontaneous fermentation in open vats. After a gentle pressing, it was racked to mature in oak barriques for 24 months on fine lees, also conducting malolactic fermentation.
Ruby red colour with dense texture.
The bouquet is intense. We detect ripe cherries, mulberries, violets, a scent of fern and black pepper, anise with a slightly smoky touch—all finishing up into a crescendo of wood, chocolate and vanilla.
A dry wine of pronounced softness, reasonable warmth with ripe freshness and velvety tannins, slowly round off. It also leaves a slightly mineral, salty taste. A wine of intensity, medium to full-body, with an elegant and reasonably persistent aftertaste revealing hints of fruit, sweet spices and smoke.
A bottle will cost you approximately 18 Eur, and you can order it straight at the winemaker by calling +386 31 855 162 or sending an e-mail to info@kristalvin.si.
