There’s been quite some interest in Rokovi vinogradi’s wines. So let’s touch on the last of their wines I’ve had the pleasure of trying. I’m speaking of their Cabernet Sauvignon from the Premium line, a wine that spent some time in used French and American oaks.
Grapes are coming from the vineyard Podsala, a west-south facing one, with thirty-five years old vines planted in a combination of Opoka and clay. The Sirk boys take care with unique training systems and crop management to maximise the quality of berries.
2019 was a vintage that allowed for relative optimal ripening of grapes. However, the harvest for Cabernet Sauvignon needed to start a little bit early as there was a forecast of rain. As picking day was cold, there was no need to cool grapes before destemming. After crushing the mash macerated for an extensive time, this was followed by gentle pressing and approximately a year of maturation in used oak barrels of American and French oak barrels, conducting malolactic conversion during this time.
This resulted in a Cabernet Sauvignon of clear, ruby red colour.
Its aromas are intense, varietal. We notice mainly fruitiness and a slight note of pepper. Black currant, cherry, chokeberry, black pepper, fern and forest undergrowth.
The wine is dry, and we perceive softness and well-integrated alcohol. On the other hand, it is fresh, tasty and tannic, with tannins slowly rounding off. The taste is intense, persistent and full-bodied with pleasant elegance.
We’re speaking of an overall elegant representative of this variety from Brda, as it had to be harvested just a little bit earlier due to the questionable weather forecast, but this is what Brda climate, with clashing of moderate Mediterranean and alpine weather, does. It is a pleasant, fruit-forward and drinkable wine which will find lovers in a broad palate of drinkers, especially after knowing it will cost you approximately 10 Eur.
