We’re returning to the Jakončič family, to the beautiful villa and winery Iaquin to taste their expression of a Bordeaux blend. We’re tasting Jak, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that matured in oak barrels.

Usually, at Iaquin, you’ll be spoiled over state of the art, varietal white wines that unite a common approach, express elegance with maturation in selected, prime quality barriques of French origin. But this wine proves that Uroš is a seasoned winemaker with the touch to produce such a charming red cuvée that mixes 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 % merlot. Both vinified separately, with maturation in French barrique barrels for 34 months before the final assemblage and bottling.

Jak presents a deep, ruby red colour with a slightly translucent border and a dense texture, which is shown by slowly slipping tears.

Its bouquet is intense and reveals a refined combination of fruit with scents of oak. We regard ripe black cherries, roasted plums, blueberries and mulberries. Hints of cedar are joined by chocolate, red pepper, carob, with a touch of cloves and coffee. The finish evokes leather, forest undergrowth and eucalyptus.

The taste is soft with well-incorporated alcohols. A wine with adolescent freshness and minerality, with velvety tannins that slowly round off. The taste is intense and elegant, with a vigorous body and lasting persistency.

Jak has the potential to age for seven years or more, though it will please already now. A bottle will cost you 23 Eur, and you can order it at Dobro vino.
