Boris Lisjak – Izbrani teran, 2020

We’re returning to Dutovlje to Boris Lisjak and his wines tonight. We’re having a look at his selected Teran, a wine produced of Refosco grapes that have been growing on the distinctive Karstic soil – Jarina.

Jarina is Karst’s distinctive red soil rich in carbonate and iron that gives depth and imprints its unique character into the wine. Combined with quite austere Karst climate wines express freshness and vibrancy, but with structure and depth.

The selected Teran we’re looking at tonight is such a representation you couldn’t find a better fit. Grapes of Refosco are destemmed and crushed. The pomace macerates for one week and is then gently pressed. The wine then matures in large, neutral oak casks for a year, also conducting malolactic fermentation during this time. Finally, it is bottled after coarse filtration.

This results in a deep, ruby red coloured wine with a purple tinge.

Aromas are intense and reveal ripe black currants, marasca, mulberry, blackberry, as well as a note of violet, forest undergrowth and a slight hint of butter.

The taste is intense. We sense the softness and warmth of the wine. Acidity is lively, and the youthful tannins act velvety and interlace with the minerality of the wine. Undoubtedly an elegant, structured wine with a lasting aftertaste.
