It is time we return to Michael Gross and his terroir expression of Furmint, coming from the Iglič climat. A wine marked by spontaneous fermentation with maturation in large oak barrels.

When speaking about Michael’s wines, especially after tasting them, we must acknowledge that things are serious. This vineyard was planted in 2008 out of a selection of clones that have been sourced from the vineyards of non-other than István Szepsy – the Lord of Hungarian wine.

Iglič is a plot in Gorca – Haloze hills characterized by limestone, clay, and marl on south-facing terraces positioned between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The plot benefits of constant wind breeze, a helpful factor that dries sensitive Furmint grapes quickly.

The production followed hand-harvesting with spontaneous fermentation, 12-month maturation in large oak barrels and later four months in stainless vats to stabilize before bottling without fining and filtration.

This results in a furmint of crystal clear, golden yellow colour with dense texture.

Its bouquet is intense and reveals Jonagold apple, quince, yellow grapefruit, and rose, a slightly buttery note interlaces with a slight scent of Mediterranean herbs and sweet spices.

The taste is intense, alcohols are well integrated into the softness of the wine, while its emphasized acidity pleasantly plays with the mineral tone of the wine. An elegant, full-bodied expression with a lasting aftertaste.

A characterful Furmint with the potential to age between five to seven years. A bottle will cost you approximately 45,50 Eur, and you can get it at eVino, Wein furore, Wein natur, Vinospirit, Klemo and Doellerer.
