We’re returning tonight to the Edi Simčič wine estate, as we set on to try another jewel from their single-vineyard wines. We’ll be looking at their barrel-fermented Chardonnay Fojana.

This is their latest line that focuses on expressing the best lieu-dits that have been giving consistent and outstanding results. And, in case you missed it, there is a new initiative in Slovenia that just launched these days – the Slovenska Velika lega. A union that focuses on crafting and promoting the best vineyards of our small yet oenologically looking reach country.

The Fojana vineyard was planted 36 years ago on Brda’s Opoka. Only 2.000 bottles have been produced in this vintage, following selective grape picking and sorting. The wine barrel fermented and then matured for 10-months in French oak barriques.

Chardonnay Fojana displays a crystal clear, golden yellow colour with expressed density.

Its aromas are majestic, accentuated. We detect ripe peach, apple and pineapple. Notes of lemon and orange merge into an attractive citrus character. The next swirl presents butter, a crust of sweet bread, honey, Mediterranean herbs and a slight touch of hot stone.

The taste is intense, sublime. Softness plays with accentuated freshness, cleaning the palate to a good measure of minerality that balances the overall sensations. A full-bodied, noble wine with a lasting aftertaste.

A real treat, guaranteed to catch fans at the first sip. A bottle will cost you approximately 35 Eur, and you can order it at eVino, Koželj (available also magnum), Vinexus, Rebellion wine, Winekillers and Drinks & Co.
