Kozinc – Sauvignon selekcija, 2018

We’re returning to Dolenjska tonight to taste another new release by the Kozinc family – their Sauvignon selekcija, partially matured in oak barrels.

I might be repeating myself, but Dolenjska’s terroir is something special. It expresses in refined wines and surprises with some gems. Such was the surprise when I poured a glass of this wine, which quickly made it into the decanter.

Grapes are exclusively hand-harvested from two vineyards. South-facing Laz and Southeast facing Doma at altitudes between 340 and 420 meters above sea level. After destemming and crushing the mesh macerates at controlled temperatures for thirty hours. It is then gently pressed, and 60 % matures in oak barrels, while 40 % are racked into stainless vats. After bottling, it waited in the cellar until its release this February.

This Sauvignon blanc shows a crystalline golden yellow colour with a dense texture.

Its bouquet is sophisticated, herbal. We detect mint, yellow apple, tangerine, pomelo, bergamot, underlined by notes of rosemary. Finally, notes of hazelnuts, vanilla, almond blossom, butter and bread crust start to open up.

A dry expression with an oily texture, reasonably warm, with crisp freshness and a mineral saltiness. A balanced palate, where freshness elevates its elegance into a structured and lasting journey.

A characterful Sauvignon with flavours of mint, elderflower, white peach are embraced by notes of roasted and caramel.
