We’re returning to one of the most iconic families when speaking of Slovenian wine. The Kristančič family is behind the honourable, over 200 years old powerhouse Movia. We’ll be looking at their rendition of the delicate Pinot noir that matured in barriques.

Grapes are coming from the vineyard Java. Vines are planted in Ponka soil at south-facing slopes and are fifteen to twenty-five years old. Organically grown bunches are hand-harvested, destemmed and crushed. They are placed in vinification tanks where maceration with spontaneous fermentation starts and wait for a further week on skins after the fermentation is complete. Following a gentle pressing, the young wine is racked into French barriques where it matures for four years, also conducting malolactic conversion. Finally, it is bottled without filtration.

This creates an extractive ruby red coloured Pinot noir with a slight garnet tip and a translucent border. The swirl shows dense texture as it quickly stops in the glass.

Aromas are delicate and intense. We identify ripe cherries and plums, hints of chokeberries, as well as notes of dried hibiscus and violet petals. Rosemary joins with black pepper, vanilla, forest undergrowth and finishes with graphite.

Its mouthfeel is soft, with nicely incorporated alcohols. It is refreshing our palate, expressing Brda’s Opoka soil minerality. The tannins are velvety, slowly rounding up. A full-bodied Pinot noir in which the play of freshness and tannins pleasantly emphasise the elegance of its persistent aftertaste.

A wine that has the potential to age for at least the next seven years, if not even more. A bottle will cost you approximately 44 Eur, and you can order it at Dobro vino, Matthys wines, TuamV and Wein natur.
