Let’s move to Prlekija tonight to meet a story of belief. A property, acquired by a French mister who fell in love while visiting the hills around Jeruzalem in Slovene Štajerska. It’s the story of Jérôme Perez, who crafts wines at Clos Veličane and tonight, we’ll look at his Pinot Gris.

The terroir of Veličane is atop one of the highest peaks around Jeruzalem, with an approximate height of 360 meters above sea level. The soil is composed of mostly sand, with some marl and even clay. And the vineyard was planted in 1998. After harvesting, grapes were taken to the cellar, destemmed, crushed and the juice fermented on lees without stirring them.

Clos Veličane’s Pinot Gris has a strawy yellow colour with a slight copper edge.

Its delicate aromas are reminiscent of fruit and blossom. We identify nectarine peach, carambola with a slight touch of grass, butter and almond blossom.

It is a wine that hides its off-dry taste, softness and structure, skillfully achieved with ageing on lees behind its refreshing and mineral character. It is medium-bodied, reasonably lasting, and elegantly pleasing while sipping it on the terrace with friends or over some raw fish dishes.

A bottle will cost you approximately 11 Eur, and you can order it by contacting Jérome at closvelicane@gmail.com, soon it will also be available at Vinoo.co.
