Pullus – Sauvignon, 2020

It is time to introduce another producer from Slovenia. We are at the wine cellar Pullus, which is among those with the longest tradition and picturesque stories in our country. We’ll be tasting their classically produced Sauvignon, which was crowned as the champion of this year’s Salon Sauvignon.

The cellar is in Ptuj, a beautiful historic city at the river Drava that dates bask to times before Rome. While under Rome, it was called Poetovia and was among the most important forts that could count up to 35,000 inhabitants, and its history has always been significantly marked by wine. In 1239 the Minorites formed the monastery in the city, and they were those who built the wine cellar in the city centre. This is also where the oldest Slovenian bottled wine is stored; it’s the Zlata trta (golden vine) vintage 1917. And, as we’re writing about Sauvignon, the oldest bottle stored here is of the vintage 1921, and its price is approximately 55,000 Eur. After all, it’s a 100-year-old wine …

The Pullus Sauvignon combines grapes from several vineyards, each contributing a specific attribute to the final wine. The Haloze hills give him warmth and structure, while the Srednje Slovenske hills provide fruitiness and freshness. Bunches were harvested early in the morning, and the production followed reductive methods of vinification. Gently pressed juice fermented in stainless vats and matured on fine lees for six months. Following assemblage, the wine was ready for bottling.

Pullus Sauvignon has a pale, strawy yellow colour with a green border and relative density.

Its bouquet is intense, immediately revealing the variety. First, we perceive elderflower, followed by scents of yellow grapefruit, then lemon, passion fruit. At the same time, we also detect notes of mint, grass and tomato leaf.

A sauvignon of reasonable softness, boasting crisp freshness and minerality. Intense, medium-bodied and relative persistency. An elegant exemplar of this variety that pleases its drinker.
