Let’s have a look at Gaube‘s Pinot Gris, or as we call it in Slovenia sivi pinot, and especially for the region we’re stopping in tonight – Rulandec (yes, you’re right, Rulander as this region has quite some influence from the neighbouring northern countries).

We’re tasting a refined expression that combines direct pressing with fermentation and maturation in stainless vats at low temperatures. All protective, to keep the primary aspect, those varietal aromas intact resulting in delicate elegance.

Grapes are sourced from a 25-year-old vineyard with a southeast aspect on soils consisting of a mixture of clay and marl. These are the slopes right beneath the border with Austria.

Gaube’s Pinot Gris displays a crystal clear, strawy yellow colour with golden shades and pronounced density.

The bouquet is sophisticated and evokes red apple, lemon, mandarin, and a white rose and notes of grass.

The palate reveals traces of residual sugar, which is nicely washed by its crisp acidic and mineral backbone, all perceptions resonating in a balanced mouthfeel. An intense, fairly structured wine where elegance is emphasized in a reasonably persistent aftertaste.

A wine that you can drink now, but it will keep its pace for the next two to three years. A bottle will cost you 8,54 Eur, and you can order it at Vin.si.
