Janko Kobal – Pinot Gris Luna, 2020

Janko Kobal – Pinot Gris Luna, 2020

Time to return to the Bizeljsko-semič wine district in Posavje, to the Kobal family. To the people, I’m always happy seeing because goodwill and openness are home there. This time I’ve actually made it to their home and Janko quickly popped open a bottle of the new Pinot Gris Luna, a wine that will slowly come to the market.

Grapes were hand-harvested from their vineyard nearby, at southwest facing slopes at altitudes of approximately 350 meters above sea level, all looked after with low-intervention methods and without herbicides.

After destemming and crushing the must was left to settle overnight, after a gentle pressing the juice was racked into used large oak casks to ferment and mature on fine lees for a year. Finally, it was bottled without filtration and now we slowly wait for it to come to the market.

Pinot Gris Luna displays a strawy yellow colour with a slight coppery hue and dense texture.

Its aromas are intense, they are reminiscent of peach, ripe yellow apple, even almond, we get also hints of straw and thyme finishing with a touch of breadcrumb and hazelnuts.

The wine is dry, fairly soft with reasonable warmth. A crisp wine with freshness and a mineral saltiness. This Pinot Gris is a refined expression of intensity, full-bodied with lasting persistency and elegance. A wine that will only improve over the next years and it has the potential to spoil us for at least the next five years.

A bottle will cost you approximately 12,5 Eur at the winemaker and is currently available by contacting Janko or Andreja at +386 41 377 988 or +386 31 394 609 or by email jankokobal12@gmail.com, andrejakobal@gmail.com. I’m sure it will be also available via Sava valley wines.
