I’m in the mood for a wine that has been touched by oak. And Ščurek‘s Jazbine is the wine I’ll be indulging in tonight. A blend of Sauvignon vert, Rebula, Friualno and Sauvignon where 20 % of it matured in oak.
Jazbine is the name of the vineyard from where hand-harvested grapes are coming from. It was planted in 1976 and has all four of them in Brda’s own Opoka soil. Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc are picked simultaneously, while Rebula and Friulano are left to ripe a bit longer. These two are the varieties that a good 20 % go to mature in oak barrels for a year, later assembled with the rest, which matured in stainless vats. Finally, the blend comprises 35 % Sauvignon vert, 15 % Rebula, 35 % Pinot Gris and 15 % Sauvignon Blanc.
This results in a crystal clear, golden yellow coloured wine with a dense texture.
Aromas are intense and recall ripe fruit, quince, golden delicacy, apricot, mango, orange peel, and almonds, thyme, mint, nettle, vanilla, butter, white pepper and straw.
Soft on the palate, with well-integrated alcohol crisp freshness and mineral. Balanced initially, but the freshness lifts it nicely and prolongs its taste. Initially, we detect flavours of roasted nuts, butter. Then we notice the fruitiness and herbs. An elegant wine of long permanence, full-bodied and with lasting intensity. A wine that deserves the 89 points of last years Decanter World Wine Awards.
