We’re heading back to Plešivo tonight to visit the Ščurek family and taste their recent release of Pinot Noir. And boy, what a refined expression of a barrel matured variety we have here.

Grapes were hand-harvested at optimum ripeness. Following destemming and crushing, the pomace macerated for 14 days. After a gentle pressing, the young wine was racked in new and used 500-litre oak barrels to mature for 36 months. Finally, it was bottled, and after a couple of months of bottle-ageing, it made it to the market.

This Pinot Noir displays a medium translucent, ruby red colour of fairly dense texture.

We detect ripe plum, black cherry, currant, hibiscus, leather, smoke, hummus, forest undergrowth. We also perceive sweet spices with cinnamon in the foreground.

The taste is luscious, soft, with nicely incorporated alcohols. It lively refreshes us, with pleasant tannins that are slowly rounding up. The taste is intense with freshness and tannins, indicating its adolescence and ageing potential. An elegant, full-bodied wine with lasting persistency and charisma, showing its fruity flavours, some hints of cherry pits, sweet spices and smoke in the aftertaste.

This Pinot Noir encompasses the elegance and nobleness of the variety. You can drink it now, but it will show its full potential in five to seven, if not even more years. A bottle will cost you approximately 25 Eur, and you can get it at eVino, Vinoo.co and Faladur.
