Tonight we’re visiting a winemaker that sure knows how to leave a mark. We’re in Bela Krajina at the Prus family, tasting their nectar in the form of this yellow muscat (rumeni muškat) late harvest, bottled in 0,5 litre bottles.
The Prus family has been known for their wines emanating character, warmth and structure, and predicate wines that indeed leave a mark. They look over some of the most prominent vineyards around Metlika and produce a wide array of wines, meeting the expectations of the most demanding connoisseurs.
Such is this rumeni muškat, which I’ve taken out of my wine archive, purely to see how it developed, and boy, what a marvel I poured in my glass.
The wine boasts a golden yellow colour and dense texture, with tears clinging to the glass walls and slowly slipping on its walls.
The bouquet is luxurious, intense, almost intoxicating. We detect mint, rosemary, lime and bergamot, grass, as well as elderberry compote, nettle, apple, honey, jasmine and cardamom.
A sweet rendition of this aromatic variety with pronounced softness but retaining the freshness and mineral saltiness. Still leaning towards the alluring, soft spot. A noble wine with intense character, lasting persistency, and a vigorous body.
Prus’ expression ot this late harvest rumeni muškat displays an exceptional ageing potential. Actually, for me, this is kind of a sweet sorrow as this was the only bottle I’ve kept, as I’d be happy to taste it in 10 years just to see where the road has taken him.
A bottle will cost you approximately 13,5 Eur, and you can order it at the winemaker, Koželj, Belokranjski harm, or at Vinoteka Sodček.
